An Tobar- The Tobermory Centre, Isle of Mull
The second phase of the renovation and alterations to The Old Primary School in Tobermory to convert the building into a cultural, community, heritage and conference facility retaining not only the exterior detail but as much of the original interior layout and character as possible, including the reuse of existing fabric and fittings.
Alteration work included new partitions, doors and stairs designed to suit the architectural quality and character of the building and new additions to the fabric such as a reception desk. The lighting and heating were sensitively introduced to avoid interfering with the character of the rooms.
In the summer the four public rooms are used to house a heritage programme including contemporary and traditional arts, local history and environmental interpretation. In the winter it is used as a community arts facility, housing rehearsals, small performances, workshops, classes, training as well as other community events such as exhibitions, trade fairs and school events.
The project was funded by Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund, ERDF Objective One, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and Argyll & Bute Council.
